Tests to customize early-stage treatment
In most instances, breast cancer is detected at an early stage. In its early stage, breast cancer may be cured by surgically excising the tumor, followed by adjuvant therapy. Adjuvant therapy may include radiation therapy, chemotherapy and/or hormone therapy.
When the tumor expresses hormone receptors and is negative for the HER2 receptor, then it may be necessary to add chemotherapy to the hormone therapy.
The use of diagnostic tests, such as OncotypeDX Breast Cancer Assay, helps the physician to customize and optimize the adjuvant therapy.
